Program Study guide
January – Daryl And Some
Basic-Learning Objectives
I cannot think of a more-appropriate lecturer to kick
off our new year than DARYL. This guy has perfected some basic
principles of magic into world-class performance pieces and used them
to take top honors at both the Magic Castle and FISM. Seriously, if
you have not seen him perform, you are going to be surprised and
FOOLED by some effects that you may have learned as a child and
tossed aside as being not worthwhile.....But, once again, you will be
fooled, and you will make a mental note to work on that little trick.
Here is a link to Daryl's product list. You will probably notice
that many may sound familiar, but each one has the Daryl touch in the
routines. You will be initially comfortable and then motivated, and
then stunned by intermediate and advanced innotations. Don't miss the
meeting!!! Here is a list, just to get you interested:

JANUARY BASIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES (Hank Tricks)
If you are a serious student of magic, you might want
to look over or review all of the study guides, beginning with 2004,
2005, and 2006. Hey!!! BUT don't get lost in them, because the 2007
objectives of this study guide are to simplify and refine the
material, which has already been posted on the web. The learning
objectives are going to be more specific and will encourage you to
glean knowledge and hone performance skills, from a number of
sources, according to your own assessment of your knowledge and skill
levels. This approach will hopefully accommodate everyone and
encourage all members to participate in an on-going study/practice
program. In fact, I am hoping that it will encourage more members
to come prepared to do a little show and tell, before and/or after
the meetings. It will also help to encourage a closer reading of our
M.U.M. Magazine and make it a useful training aid.
NOTE: If you have not yet bought a copy of Mark
Wilson's COMPLETE COURSE IN MAGIC, you are really missing out....Most
of the tricks I have done in the past 60 years are in the book, and
you will probably see a monthly reference to it in this guide. I
received an e mail some time ago from Mark Wilson, who told me that,
with the Russian-language edition, his sales have been more than a
half million copies....I hate to limit the man's profits, but you
might find some copies for less than 20 bucks at Half Price Books.
Oh, and do not waste any money on the CYCLOPEDIA thing; it is a
waste...(Sorry Mark)....but do get the CCIM....
OBJECTIVE I - M.U.M. December 2006: Everybody
should read the article, “Beginner's Mine” on page 32, especially
the first paragraph. Learn the “Gypsy Switch”. It is a great
utility tool that you will find very useful in the future. Then,
while you have the hank and coin out, take a look at the two versions
of “Coin Through Handkerchief”, in Wilson's CCIM. Also see:
http://www.magichobby.co.uk/trick_view.php?id=320
- Practice the coin-penetration effect and the “Gypsy
Switch”...... (Do not be frightened by the picture of Kent Cummins
on page 70...tsk tsk...)
OBJECTIVE II - “Gypsy Switch” Applications. Think about all
the different ways the switch might be used. Here is a simple
application; surely, you can come up with something just as good:
http://library.thinkquest.org/26485/gypsy.htm
Discuss your ideas with a fellow Assembly member or two.
OBJECTIVE III - Impromptu Handkerchief Tricks - Learn at least
one other handkerchief trick. I recommend “Fatima the Dancer” on
page 270 of Wilson's CCIM. Practice and perfect one good
handkerchief routine.
NOTE: As soon as we get the monthly topics/themes
posted, I will be asking for your inputs, regarding related
objectives. references, and tips. It is YOUR STUDY GUIDE. Let US
make it count.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR........opie

February - Children's Magic
OBJECTIVE I M.U.M. January 2007, Beginner's Mine, page 36. The Bo-Snip
Switch is a utility item that can be used with a number of objects, for
a number of tricks. For example, you might use the switch to change a
penny to a piece of mint candy, at the end of your performance for a
child. If you are doing walkaround in a hospital, this could be a good
closer for each child visited....(Check with the nurse, to make sure
the kids can have the candy.) So, Objective I is to learn the switch
and come up with some other ideas for its use.
Note: The Bo-Snip Switch would be a good Teach-In item at regular or S.Y.M. meetings.
OBJECTIVE II - (1) Review the 2004 Study Guide on Children's Magic: http://www.austinmagic.org/sam/studyguide2004.html#March - (2) Review the 2005 Study Guide on Favorite Tricks: http://www.austinmagic.org/sam/studyguide2005.html#mozTocId365156
- The goal here is to select a half dozen tricks that you might use for
the basic core of a Children Magic Show....Hey! Okay, then at least
pick three that you will practice and perfect.
OBJECTIVE III - *** (1) Read John Maverick's recommended items below.
(2) Think about and jot down ways to drive kids nuts, and share them at
the meeting. (3) Bring a note pad; you will be glad you did.
Other Recommended Readings:
*** John Maverick, the February Program Moderator, recommends that members consider looking at David Kaye's SERIOUSLY SILLY, and he asked me to pass on these links:
POINTS TO PONDER - Here are some questions you might want to think about to help enhance your Children's Magic Show:
1. What tricks or routines have you seen or heard about that make kids go crazy with enthusiasm?
2. What do you do to settle kids down, without losing them?
3. How do you handle a kid heckler?
4. How do you make a kid volunteer from the audience feel comfortable and important?
5. What would be some good tricks to promote safety, no drugs, self esteem?

March - Richard Turner, The Cheat
Richard Turner is blind.....but he can do just about everything in the
first 124 pages of Erdnase's THE EXPERT AT THE CARD TABLE, except for
maybe the peeks and some culls....but he has some ways around
them....Read the short bio here: http://www.richardturner52.com/dvd_thecheat.html (Read the short bio at The Cheat web)
If that sounds interesting, take a look at his performance in this video: http://www.richardturner52.com/performances.html (Watch the 12-minute performance video)
Now you really have to be interested in learning a little more about
card-table skills, for whatever your reason might be......ENTERTAINING?
Right? So, just to satisify your curiousity, until you can get a hard
copy of the book or one of Richard's videos, here is an on-line copy of
the Erdnase book....Go ahead, take years to read and perfect the
material in the first 124 pages....Then try it with your eyes
closed....tsk tsk.....:
http://www.freewebs.com/realsecrets/Erdnase20.htm (Free download of Erdnase's THE EXPERT AT THE CARD TABLE)
If you have a little problem with the sketchy Erdnase descriptions, you might find some amplification of the moves here: http://www.neo-tech.com/neocheating/contents.html (The Neo Cheating Handbook)
You say you don't have ten years to learn all that card-shark stuff? I
have been playing with the Erdnase material for 60 years and I still
cannot do most of it....So, how are we to prepare to observe an amazing
exhibition of card mastery and some entertaining card magic...... and
perhaps even play a little Three Card Monte with Richard? Let us
lay out a couple of objectives:
OBJECTIVE ONE: Read or review card basics in the card chapters of Mark Wilson's COMPLETE COURSE IN MAGIC.
OBJECTIVE TWO: Read or do a quick page-by-page review of Hugard and Braue's THE ROYAL ROAD TO CARD MAGIC (RRTCM).
OBJECTIVE THREE: Review the 2004 Study Guide at: http://www.austinmagic.org/sam/studyguide2004.html#April (Study Guide and checklist from RRTCM)
The bottom line is that Richard Turner will show us the gut-wrenching
basics of card handling. He will do it in a manner that will make
us want to just wear out decks of cards to gain just one tiny bit of
mastery that this man has......
You will be entertained and enlightened and will never look at a deck of cards the same way again......opie

November - Stage Magic
Just because most of us are not into big stage productions does not
mean that we should not at least learn the basics of stage craft.
However, we might be called upon one day to put together a full stage
program. What to do? There is much to consider. But let us keep
it simple by merely doing some reading in Wilson's Complete Course in
Magic and a few on-line links which might be of interest. So, mark your
calendars for the meeting Monday evening, where you might get answers
to questions your readings do not reveal, and prepare for an exciting
look at stage magic.
Read the following items in Wilson's Complete Course in Magic:
Magical Illusions, pp. 435 - 472. I am particularly fond of the
principles involved in “The Mystery of the Magical Mummy”, “The
Farmer and the Witch”, and “The Suspension Illusion”.
Giant Cards, pp. 133 - 143. One does not have to search too far to find
something to perform on stage. I like the “Sympathetic Cards” and “The
Applause Card”.
Rope Magic, pp. 235 - 265. Consider putting together a short stand-up
routine with a rope and maybe one of the “escape/release” routines.
Mental Magic, pp. 317 - 335. Do you need a “Magazine Test” or a “Bank Night” routine? They are there!
Make at Home Magic, pp. 345 - 389. There is a ton of material in this chapter, too much to really absorb in a sitting. But do
think about the “principles” involved during your reading, and select
at least one trick/routine that you might want to put together.
The topic is really too huge to address completely in this limited
guide. I have not touched on the great manipulation work with cards,
coins, and balls that win contests. Perhaps we will address them
another time.
On-Line Links: Here are some links that might be of interest to some of our members. A couple of them are just fun items:

December - End-Of-Year Quiz
Over the past year, we have looked at a mass of material, through the
use of links and upplemental readings. Hopefully, we retained most
of the information. However, it never hurts to look back and review,
occasionally. Unfortunately, many of the web links provided on the
guides have fallen off a cyber cliff or have been removed/changed.
Whatever the reason, there are those which need replacing.
Therefore, your first task is to review the year's material and help me
bring it up
to date by finding and providing me some substitute references, either
reading materials or cyber webs. This act can be accomplished by
responding to the questions below and looking back at guides. The
questions are generally in the order of the topics addressed, beginning
January 2007, but you may find a few thrown in that were not addressed
in the material, just to keep things interesting.
First are some links to important webs that every member should
bookmark and keep handy. (Give me a call, if you have any problems
getting on any of the sites.)
